Grenada Disaster Preparedness Toronto(GDPTor)

Grenada Disaster Preparedness Toronto (GDPTor) was established in 2017 in response to the urgent need for improved disaster preparedness, aiming to reduce the impact of disasters and support efficient, timely response efforts. GDPTor was registered as a Toronto-based not-for-profit organization in 2019. With the motto “For Love of Nation,” the purpose of the organization is “to provide Emergency Relief Assistance- Financial, Material, Technical and/or Advisory to the State Grenada, in the event of any national emergency resulting from natural disasters, fire, flood, epidemic or similar emergencies.”

Among all the Grenadian organizations in Toronto, Canada; GDPTor is the only registered organization dedicated to providing emergency relief assistance to Grenada and by extent to the wider Caribbean.

Disaster Preparedness

Disasters, whether natural or man-made, create significant challenges and devastating consequences. Loss of lives, disruption of essential services and destruction of property trigger the demand for effective disaster management and emergency response systems. The failure to effectively manage disasters can exacerbate their impact, leading to prolonged recovery and increased economic costs.

Since its inception, GDPTor has actively led and supported a range of initiatives aimed at coordinating resources for disaster relief and promoting a culture of preparedness and resilience. From hosting webinars and training sessions to raise disaster awareness, to organizing water drives for St. Vincent following the 2021 La Soufrière volcanic eruption, GDPTor has consistently responded to regional crises. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization donated over 100,000 face masks and hand sanitizers to Grenada. Each hurricane season, GDPTor provides essential emergency supplies such as food, flashlights, safety vests, tarpaulins, blankets, generators, and radios to support affected communities.

In addition to direct aid, GDPTor has built a strong legacy of collaboration, partnering with organizations like GlobalMedic and the Canadian Caribbean Disaster Relief Action (CCaDira) to maximize human and material resources during disaster response and recovery efforts.
